Accenture employees go without leave till March 31

If you happen to be an Accenture employee in India, you will have to stop dreaming about taking leave at least for the next couple of months.

Accenture told some of its employees today through team meetings that they would not be allowed to take leave till March 31, and the leave that had already been granted will stand cancelled for the period, sources said.

Accenture believes this will safeguard the variable pay of its employees, which depends on chargeability, or how much it can charge its clients. If employees do not take leave it would be possible for Accenture to increase its chargeability. Analysts said such measures are being taken by companies to drive utilisation rates, thereby increasing revenue per employee.

“If a company cancels vacation time, or even if the downtime caused due to sickness is taken out, it would be able to bill clients for the additional hours,” the analyst said. This is important for Time and Material contracts where employees are billed on an hourly basis. It would benefit fixed price projects also because the time available for work would go up.

Temporary move
Accenture said employees will not be allowed to take either sick leave or earned leave. It is not sure how long this would continue, but has temporarily set a deadline of March 31, sources said. The measure would be applicable to all staff in the India development centre. The various teams are likely to be informed about this in due course.

Accenture employs more than 37,000 people in India. It is not sure if this applies to its BPO employees in India. Accenture did not respond to Business Line queries.

The company recently increased the weekly work hours by five hours.

Such a measure has not helped the company to increase its productivity to desired levels, Accenture told its employees.
