The Alignment Theory and the Zero Hierarchy Structure

Well, its almost been 2 years since i started working and there are few things that you start to notice. So with that, let me present :
The Alignment Theory
You See, People need security, security comes in numbers, hence people, especially in the corporate world, align themselves with people or situations that suit their best interest. This is what i call the Alignment Theory.
Closely associated with the Alignment Theory is what i call the “Zero Hierarchy Structure“. Many organizations today are trying to implement the “Zero Hierarchy” Structure, what that essentially means is that a bunch of people work together to solve a problem and a fatter pay cheque does not command a greater say in the direction of the solution/discussion. Idea is to develop a working culture, where one can freely exchange ideas.However, “Zero Hierarchy” Structure is failing in most organization, partly because of “The Alignment Theory”.
Most discussions aimed at finding the best solution end up becoming discussions aimed at arriving at the majority solution. Lets face the fact, It is easier to align with the majority, avoid disagreements and save time. The majority solution, can often be a cost effective solution, however, it rarely is the innovative, out of the box solution. Majority solution will satisfy the client, but it would not sweep him off his feet.
If correctly implemented,Zero Hierarchy can lead to development of stronger, more trusting teams, it can empower teams, it can enhance the output manifold. Over the last couple of years, i have had the opportunity to work in both zero hierarchy and highly hierarchy driven teams. Given the choice i would definitely prefer a Zero Hierarchical Working Environment. What would you prefer? Please feel free to add your thoughts in the comments section.
